How Anne started

Anne is a small bakery on the Prinsengracht, run by a family that has been baking in Amsterdam for three generations. It started as a single counter with a hand-written chalkboard and a queue that formed before seven in the morning. Not much has changed since — we still write the board by hand, and the queue still forms.

Everything is inspired by Dutch tradition: appeltaart with tart local apples, dark rye, soft milk rolls, and stroopwafels pressed on cast-iron irons that are older than anyone working here.

Fresh ingredients, nothing hurried

Flour comes from a Dutch mill, butter and dairy from farms outside the city, fruit from the market whenever the season allows. Dough is mixed the evening before and left to ferment overnight, which is why our bread tastes of something more than flour.

We bake in small batches all day rather than once in the morning, so there is almost always something warm on the counter — and always a reason to discover more the next time you pass by.
